President Lel ShinRa Age: 65

Personality: Lel is a complicated man. His view of the world has been skewed by years ruling it, by being the wealthiest man alive. He treats human beings like his personal play things. His manner is patronizing and overly kind-- as if he thinks others are too slow to understand anything he says, so he'll say it very nicely, to soften the blow of incomprehension. But while his tone is warm, his heart is cold as ash and just as black: moral black and whites are all gray to him, and he'll authorize the use of human lab rats and infant test subjects, then sleep at night no-problem. Lel is the man who will talk to you about your wife and kids and pets to distract you while he slips poison in your cup. Accustomed to being heeded constantly, he is short-tempered and fickle, though he's canny enough to hide his most outlandishly rude behavior when he has company to impress. Mostly, he's not concerned about impressing people.

Strengths: There's something to be said for self-confidence. Rufus may have been raised to take the throne, but Lel ShinRa built his empire and ruled it for decades with tried and true canny. He is more than capable of a hostile takeover- of whatever company he sets his sights on. ShinRa, WRO, world... beware >:} He is shockingly charismatic, for those who do not know him, and a perfect gentleman. And nine times out of ten, he'll spot a person's weaknesses, strengths, hang-ups and convictions five minutes into a conversation. He practically wrote the rules of manipulating people, and trained himself in their precise usage long ago, until he could take advantage of his ability to read people to talk them into things they would never in a million years agree to. He can also turn on the intimidation, driving people through fear into doing what he says-- though that is, admittedly, not really his style. Last but not least, he has a mean backhand, heavy enough to lay people flat, though recently there's less and less strength behind it. It's still a formidable cuff. Weaknesses: A dicky heart, made worse by weight and stress. He has little muscle-- his backhands are the thing of ShinRa legends, but at the end of his life those legends were turning into lore. While trained to use a handgun, he's not a very skilled shot, and is used to relying on SOLDIER and the Turks to watch his back. Accustomed to simply Being In Charge, ShinRa is not very good at making friends if he's not concentrating. He's short-tempered and mercurial, and completely oblivious to moral right and wrong. He also has a knack for underestimating people, such as his son, and the members of AVALANCHE. He has an unhealthy obsession with honeybees.

History: He was born the son of a blue collar coal miner in the small town of Nibelheim. His mother died when he was 5, and he has no memory of her. Lel ShinRa was always a bright boy, head and shoulders above his classmates growing up, and a quiet outcast because of it. Before long he was three grades above his age and out-pacing the teacher at every turn. In Nibelheim, in those days, every boy above the age of 16 either worked in the mines or joined the army, and so a 13 year old reading at a 17 year old's level didn't have many options, especially if his family didn't have money. And thanks to the mining company, nobody's family had money. So, the day he turned 14, Lel worked behind the counter in the company stores, and took every odd job he could get his hands on, scraping and scrounging... and learning the tricks the Mayfell Mining Company used to keep the town under its thumb, from fixed prices and embargoes to propaganda and peer pressure. The day he turned 16, Lel took what he had earned, and left Nibelheim for Cosmo Canyon. He blamed his father for falling into Mayfell's "obvious ploy," and never spoke to the man again. In Cosmo Canyon, Lel studied everything he could get his hands on, but at the top of his list was business. While he was there he met three dear friends: a young science student his age from Junon, Gast Faremis; a Cosmo local and teacher at the university, Bugenhagen; and the daughter of an Icicle-area oil baron, Adina Falke. Together, the four witnessed the battle between the Gi and the Canyon's Guardians, and the subsequent destruction of both races, and it gave Lel and Idea. He proposed the idea to his friends, and together they drew up plans to build a company. When Lel was 18, they received a hefty loan from Adina's family-- and began Cosmo Manufacturing Works. But there was conflict among the partners. Lel wanted to develop weapons, as the world, he said, would always be willing to pay good money to destroy itself, but Gast and Bugenhagen wanted to put their efforts into studying the Lifestream, though Gast was admittedly more interested in the biological affects of the substance, while Bugenhagen was more interested in its purpose. Adina, with her background in oil, thought the best route was to create an energy company. On Lel ShinRa's 21st year, their desires collided in the most serendipitous way, when Gast discovered the process by which the Lifestream could be distilled into Mako energy. At first, ShinRa, owning the majority of the company (by that time already called ShinRa Manufacturing Works,) simply used the energy to power his weapons. But as time went by and Gast and Bugenhagen discovered that Mako energy could be mass-produced, the team realized the true potential of their discovery: clean, renewable energy. It was, very possibly, the greatest discovery mankind had ever made. That year, Lel proposed to Adina. After she accepted, he bought her shares of the company and took ShinRa global, relocating their offices to the Midland Gardens-- the lush center of the eastern continent, with the small city of MidGar at its heart, and the lifestream in its very soil. There, they built Reactor 0. Within one year, that single reactor had brought in enough money to make them the among the wealthiest companies in the world. They changed the company's name to ShinRa Electric Power Company. Lel bought a plot in the Nibel Mountains, and promptly put Mayfell Mining Company flat out of business by building a reactor there. Nibelheim shrank, without coal mining to bring in money, and became a quiet mountain hamlet. ShinRa's father died never knowing it was his son who put him out of work. For the next many years, ShinRa Company thrived. Lel fed his desire for a hand in the weapons market by developing the best and the strongest arms the world over-- and soon enough, Gast discovered that the human body could be infused with Mako to make it better, stronger. Superhuman. The individuals to undergo Mako treatment worked for a subsidiary of ShinRa called SOLDIER as mercenaries. It was because of them that Bugenhagen left, though he had been growing distant for years, called away by his duties in Cosmo Canyon and his moral misgivings. ShinRa Company's discoveries were fast in coming, thanks in large part to the genius of Gast, including everything from Jenova to materia fusion and in between. Soon enough The Company had a hand in every market, had hired the greatest minds money could buy, and were a household name the world over. ShinRa's power peaked when they began a fight with Wutai because the country refused to allow a Mako Reactor on its soil. Nobody but Wutai protested the invasion of a country by a company. Nobody thought to challenge calling it a "war." When Lel ShinRa was killed by Sephiroth, his company was at the height of its power.
